Treating the condition of excessive sweating

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition described as excessive sweating and is much more common than you may realize. In some cases, sweating may affect your whole body at once or just a few specific areas of your body. In most cases, both sides of the body are usually affected equally.

Commonly affected areas are:

  • Palm of your hands
  • Armpits
  • Soles of your feet
  • Face, chest, and scalp
  • Groin

It can be quite uncomfortable to excessively sweat in any situation. Whether it’s caused by nerves, strenuous exercise, or hormones– it’s an extremely frustrating position to be in to be constantly worrying about it throughout the day.

You may have been in situations where you’re at an event or on a first date– and you start experiencing hyperhidrosis. Many people with hyperhidrosis avoid social settings because they know the sweating will be obvious through their clothes and their handshakes.

Many worry about the sweating causing odor and excessively apply deodorant. The worst area seems to always be the underarms in terms of odor and perspiration. If severe enough, it could ruin your clothes and cause self-esteem issues.

Excessive sweating doesn’t usually pose a serious threat to your health, but as with all of the uncomfortable situations described above, it does negatively impact your quality of life.

What are the types of Hyperhidrosis?

Primary hyperhidrosis covers the cases where the cause of the excessive sweating isn’t fully known or obvious yet. It’s usually suspected to be an issue with the part of the nervous system that controls sweating.

Secondary hyperhidrosis are the cases that have a cause that can be identified. There are many different known triggers including:

  • Anxiety
  • Certain medications
  • Pregnancy or menopause
  • An overactive thyroid gland
  • Low blood sugar
  • Infections
  • Obesity

Secondary hyperhidrosis often starts more suddenly than primary hyperhidrosis and tends to affect the whole body. Hyperhidrosis is a long-term condition, but many people experience improvement over time once they find a treatment that works for their unique condition.

What treatment can improve this condition?

One treatment method that we have seen a lot of success with to treat excessive sweating is through neuromodulator injections such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau. These drugs use botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat.

Just like with using neuromodulators for cosmetic procedures, re-treatment is typically needed every 4-6 months as the nerves regenerate.

Neuromodulator injections are generally well-tolerated by patients, and the treatment is very effective and successful when hyperhidrosis is confined to one area of the body. The underarms, in particular, respond the best to injections, and that is typically where most of the excessive sweating and odor is coming from.

It’s important to work with a board-certified dermatologist for excessive sweating, because there are a few serious conditions that the excessive sweating symptoms could be pointing to. There’s also a lot of medical knowledge about treatment methods and which will work for your unique situation. At times, we may need to recommend a clinical-strength antiperspirant before resorting to injections.

The injections to treat excessive sweating is a relatively simple procedure. Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area up to one hour before the injections. Dr. Potozkin or Dr. Ellis will clean the area and make any injections with a tiny, fine needle.

Swelling, bruising, and tenderness is possible after the treatment and will depend on the area being treated. Improvement will typically start to be noticed 5 days after treatment with full results being experienced after two weeks.

If you’re ready to stop dealing with excessive sweating, book your consultation to see if neuromodulator injections are right for your condition.

Our Philosophy

“Our practice philosophy is simple — to deliver the very best care we can in the very best way we can. To us, that means we make each and every patient feel welcomed from the moment that they walk in the door until they leave the office. It means that we listen to what the patient has to say and address those concerns. It means we give advice and recommend treatments based on our extensive training with leaders in the field, our wealth of personal experience, and our commitment to excellence. For our cosmetic patients, it means working with the patient to achieve results that look natural, not overdone or exaggerated. It means that we always strive to do the right thing for the patient, as we value very highly ethics, honesty, and integrity. It means we stand behind what we do and will do everything in our power to get the best results we can for the patient. It means we carefully select the highest quality staff to represent us and help us carry out these goals. Lastly and most importantly, it means that we treat the patient the way we would want ourselves to be treated, with respect and kindness. Because at the end of the day, without all of our loyal patients, we wouldn’t have a practice.”

"Dr. Potozkin and his team are the best! My skin issues/problems have drastically improved since I have been coming to this Doctor-over 5, maybe even 10 years. His staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The office is a flagship store that sells my favorite skin repair and healing products- by SkinCeuticals. I don’t live near this office, but I would never go anywhere else even if it’s closer. Absolutely worth the trip. The results are real!"
