Mohs surgery is considered to be the most effective technique for treating and removing common types of skin cancer. Many types of both basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (and some types of melanoma) can be removed by this revolutionary technique.
This precise surgical technique involves Dr. Potozkin removing and examining thin layers of cancerous skin one by one until only healthy tissue remains. Between each layer, lab work and an examination will be completed while the patient stays in the office.
Completing this procedure in stages makes the Mohs technique advantageous for several reasons. The surgeon is able to confirm that all cancer cells have been removed at the time of surgery by getting a full view of the tumor and its margins. Mohs Surgery was recently recognized as a specialty unto itself by the American Board of Medical Specialties. In October of 2021, Dr. Potozkin joined the first group of physicians to take the board certification exam in Mohs Surgery. He is board-certified in both Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
