Enjoying the outdoors is one of the best things you can do for overall wellness. Research shows that natural light, interacting with nature, and the exercise you get from being outside are beneficial to both mental and physical health. With all the extra time you’ll be spending in the sun in the coming months, it’s important to remember how to care for your skin beyond just applying sunscreen.
- Certain clothing can act as a shield against UV rays: Sun damage can happen all year round, but the majority of skin damage happens during the summer months. Recently, we’ve seen an uptick in brands developing daywear that acts as a protectant against the sun. Specialty clothing items will have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) label that tells you how well the material can shield against harmful UV rays. Your closet may also have a few pieces that act as natural sun deflectors. Darker materials like gray and navy blue will absorb UV rays, protecting your skin from a surprise burn. Tightly knitted pieces or weaves also stop damaging UV rays from hurting your skin. Unbleached cotton, light silks, and high luster polyesters can also repel the sun’s rays.
- Be careful about what you put on your lips and face: We know that sunscreen is the most obvious way to shield your skin from skin damage, but what about protection for your lips? Fortunately, many brands now offer lip balm with sunscreen. When looking for the right one for you, be sure it has at least 15SPF. SPF ratings of 5 or 10 don’t provide enough protection. If you are going to be in the sun for most of the day, apply it at least every two hours. High gloss lipsticks and lip glosses will attract the sun’s rays, so opt for matte versions. Darker colored lipstick and eye shadow will add an extra buffer between the delicate skin on your face and the sun. Dermatologists suggest that the surest way to protect your face is to first apply sunscreen (at least SPF15) then put your make up on top. Be sure the sunscreen you put on your face is dermatologist approved and won’t clog your pores.
