Are At-Home Microneedle Treatments Safe?

Sep 30 2018

Cosmetic Dermatology Danville, CAIt’s easy to become obsessive about skin when you work with skin day-in and day-out. We love to see the results patients get when they commit to taking care of their skin. But, skincare isn’t the easiest thing to master. Our skin changes through the year, so what worked on our dry winter skin might be too moisturizing for our happier summer skin. We age and develop new concerns.

That’s why we’re always trying new things and reading about new treatments and products. If you’re like us, you’ve probably heard about dermarollers, which became very prevalent in the last year. But do they work? Are they safe? Keep reading.

Dermarollers and Microneedles

At-home microneedle treatments like dermarollers are almost everywhere you look. But do they do the job? Dermarollers look like miniature paint rollers, simply covered in needles. These needles puncture the skin as the tool passes over the skin, creating small holes that allow products to sink deeper into the skin. Generally, the products you buy online are not deep enough to puncture the dermis layer of the skin, which means that you’re not going to boost collagen production with these at-home treatments.

Dermaroller Results

Ideal results include faded scars, lightened hyperpigmentation, smoothed wrinkles, and better product absorption. Of course, the results you get may vary, depending on the product you choose. Some dermarollers include products or lights to help boost their results.

Is At-Home Microneedling Safe?

Safety is important when it comes to our skin and our health. Dermarolling has a lot of fans, but there are other people who are wary about poking their face with little needles.

Make sure your device is clean, sterilized, and well-taken care of. A dirty dermaroller can transfer bacteria or yeast around your skin, causing breakouts–and worse.

How Much Do Dermarollers Cost?

You can find cheaper versions of a dermaroller for ten dollars, or you can find options with more bells and whistles for upwards of one hundred dollars. Some brands even package dermarollers in with products (so they’re more effective).
