Top Treatments for Varicose Veins

Oct 29 2013

No one wants to walk around with dark, unsightly varicose veins on their arms, hands, or legs. Fortunately, there are now many effective treatment options to correct the appearance of these unwanted veins.

Let’s take a closer look at the top 4 treatments options for patients with varicose veins.

  1. Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy can be performed in a doctor’s office, typically in about 30 minutes. With this treatment, skin is first cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and an agent called “sclerosant” is injected into the affected veins. One injection is usually enough to clear the vein’s appearance. The procedure is safe,  requires little downtime,  and results are fully visible in a few weeks’ time.
  2. Ambulatory PhlebectomyAmbulatory phlebectomy is a method through which doctors remove sections of damaged veins,  while the patient is under local anesthesia. A doctor identifies damaged veins, makes tiny incisions at the targeted areas, and inserts a surgical hook to extract them.  Healthy veins are preserved, stabilizing normal blood flow.  The procedure usually takes about an hour, and patients generally return to normal activities in just days.
  3. CoolTouch Endovenous Laser. The CoolTouch Endovenous Laser (CTEL) treats varicose veins, starting with a single incision.  Next, the laser is inserted into targeted veins, which are numbed with local anesthetic. This causes the laser to heat.  By the time the laser is removed, the damaged veins have been sealed by the laser’s heat.  The procedure normally takes around 30 minutes, and patients are advised to wear compression stockings for a few weeks following treatment.
  4. Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. With this method, doctors use ultrasound technology to view the exact location of damaged veins. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy  (USG) is effective for removing medium to large varicose veins, which cannot be treated with regular sclerotherapy. Prior to this procedure, doctors must be certain that the targeted veins are large enough to take an injection of the treatment chemicals, which eliminate the appearance of the veins. This procedure requires a complete recovery time of around 6 to 8 weeks, and patients are advised to wear compression stocking to help ease any swelling.
