Adult Acne: Why does it happen? What can I do?

Aug 1 2011

We’ve all heard of acne in our teens, but many adults never outgrow it.  It’s even been suggested that as much as 50% of women experience acne at some point in their adult life.  While the exact causes aren’t clear, adult acne has often been attributed to stress, hormones and even cosmetics.  Many women also experience premenstrual flare-ups, a monthly increase in their acne symptoms.  Although acne is not life-threatening, anyone who has experienced it firsthand is well aware of the emotional distress it can cause.  What’s important to remember is that acne can occur at any age, and there are a myriad of treatments available.

Treatment Options

Acne is a term for pimples, clogged pores and deeper lumps called cysts or nodules.  It most often presents itself on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back.  The goals of acne treatment are often to reduce oil production, prevent new blemishes and treat current acne symptoms.  We will work with you to find the best solution available.

Treatment options include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Topicals
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Isotretinoin

Often a combination of treatments is used to combat acne symptoms.  We can also give you information about preventing scarring.  Although for some people scarring is inevitable, for many there are treatments available that can reduce its appearance.
