Avoiding Rosacea Flares
Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition characterized by the appearance of bright red patches or pimples on the face. It can also occur on the neck, ears, or scalp. Rosacea can often be triggered by various factors, including eating certain foods, or certain environmental conditions. While rosacea can impact anyone, the condition commonly occurs in fair-skinned adults between the ages of 30 and 50.
Though there is currently no cure for rosacea, there are many ways to treat symptoms of this common issue. Here is a list of ways to avoid rosacea flares.
- Use gentle cleansers and lotions for your face. Many face washes and lotions contain fragrances and dyes, which can cause irritation to the skin. Since patients with rosacea are already vulnerable to irritated, dry skin, it is important to be gentle with your skin. Before buying a skin care product, be sure to carefully read all the ingredients in the product, to make sure it contains no harmful ingredients that can cause any more issues. Also, try to avoid touching or rubbing your skin too much.
- Protect your skin during the winter. Cold weather is not a rosacea patient’s friend, since it can cause skin to become more dry and irritated. When you do venture out in the cold weather months, be sure to protect your face with either a ski mask or a scarf. Also, it’s important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, year-round!
- Antibiotics. Antibiotics used to treat rosacea can come in the form of over-the-counter creams or pills, or a prescription from your doctor. These medicines used to treat rosacea have anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce skin redness and irritation. Moderate to severe cases of rosacea can usually be treated with a pill.
- Consider other treatment methods. Some patients have experienced success with alternative therapies, such as taking vitamins or herbs. Since rosacea outbreaks are sometimes linked to stress, some people with the condition try to control their symptoms with exercise therapy or meditation.
