Banish Itchy and Dry Skin

Nov 15 2017

Cosmetic Dermatology Danville, CAWith the onset of fall and winter, most people get dry, flaky, or itchy skin in some form. The culprit? Chilly wind, low humidity, tough soaps, and even sunburn. These expert tips will help you quell unsightly or uncomfortable itchy skin.

Improve Your Skin Care Regimen

First, remove old skin cells. If your skin is well prepped, it will allow moisturizer to penetrate deeper. Exfoliate gently using soft scrubbing motions. Remember, consult your doctor before you begin a new skin regimen. After you’ve created a clean, fresh surface, apply an oil-based moisturizer. Moisturizers that are oil based are wonderfully heavy and provide additional skin support by keeping water from evaporating from the skin surface. You can also use glycerin, mineral oil or other basic moisturizing ingredients. Make sure you apply your moisturizer right after you shower to help lock the moisture in.

Be gentle on your Skin

Winter is a tempting time to take luxurious hot baths, but it can be detrimental to your skin. Instead, allow your body to warm up using lukewarm baths. This will help your body to retain skin protecting oils. Scrub your body with soap only where it is needed: the groin, feet, face, and underarms. Skin care research shows that using scented anti bacterial soaps remove essential oils from the skin. Opt for more mild brands.

Beware of the Sun

Even during cooler months, the sun can cause severe burns. For everyday protection, apply a moisturizer with an SPF of no less than 15. This will help guard your face and skin against harmful UVB and UVA rays.

Use Your Diet to Your Advantage

A diet containing healthy fats and omega-3s can help fight against the dry or itchy skin. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, halibut, walnuts, safflower oil, and flax. Be sure to consume the recommended 6-8 glasses of water per day. Help hydrate your skin by investing in a humidifier and humidity monitor to help offset seasonal dryness.
