Microdermabrasion: What You Should Know

Oct 5 2011

The benefits of microdermabrasion, or “microderm,” are seemingly endless.  This treatment is often used to soften fine lines, smooth the texture of the skin and reduce the appearance of mild to moderate sun damage.  Essentially, microderm uses a gentle stream of fine particles to exfoliate the outer layer of skin, with the goal of creating a fresh, youthful appearance.  Since such a small amount of skin is removed, microderm can be used to treat even the most sensitive of areas.

What to Expect with a Microdermabrasion Treatment

A microderm treatment usually takes around 30 minutes.  During the procedure, we use a gentle stream of particles to scrape away the surface layer of aging or damaged skin.  These particles are brushed away with a vacuum tool, and the entire procedure is completed without the need for anesthesia.

All skin types can benefit from microderm, and we can meet to discuss whether or not you’re a candidate for the procedure.  How long the results will last can vary from person to person, but in general, you can prolong the effects of microderm through touch-up appointments and proper skin care.  Often, other procedures are performed in concert with a microdermabrasion treatment.  These procedures include chemical peels, laser treatment and other types of skin renewal.
