Keeping Skin “Springy” This Season

Mar 21 2012

Spring is all about new beginnings. So, how about taking a few moments to give your skin a fresh start?  With warmer weather fast approaching, here are a few tips to keep your skin beautiful, protected and “springy” this season.

First and foremost, what makes our skin springy?  The most important factor is the naturally-occurring structural fibers in the skin: elastin and collagen.  These fibers can become damaged for different reasons, resulting in skin that appears thin, flat and old.  What’s the biggest culprit?  The sun.  Harmful UV radiation from the sun—and indoor tanning—can damage collagen and elastin and cause dramatic premature aging.  So, what does that spell for you?  Wrinkles!

As spring usually means we’re outdoors more often, the need for sun protection becomes especially important this time of year.  Choosing a good moisturizer with adequate SPF is your best defense against the sun—not to mention, premature wrinkles!

Wrinkle Treatments

Of course, wrinkles are also a natural part of the aging process.  While we can’t stop time in its tracks, cosmetic dermatology offers several solutions for combating wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Here are a few of the most popular wrinkle treatments today:

Botox & fillers: Botox and dermal fillers represent the most popular of cosmetic treatments in the world—injectables.  Botox, which is essentially a muscle relaxer, works by preventing intermittent facial creases.  For deep, persistent wrinkles, fillers like Juvederm can be the best solution.  Fillers work by filling in the valleys of creases.  As with any injectable treatment, the goal is a fresher, more youthful appearance.

Laser treatments: Laser treatments, such as the cutting-edge Fraxel re:pair, is an incredibly effective way of “turning back the clock.”  These laser procedures use light to not only improve the appearance of wrinkles, but a host of other issues like sun damage and acne scars.

Chemical peel: One of the most time-tested means of combating facial creases is with a chemical peel.  Chemical Peels remove the damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring and remove blemishes.
